Terms of Use
Sumi · Effective 23 October 2026
These terms are between you and Brightsmilesolutions Ltd ("we"), which makes Sumi. If you downloaded Sumi from the App Store, Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. If the two conflict, the Apple agreement wins for App Store downloads.
Sumi Pro and subscriptions
- Sumi Pro is offered as a yearly subscription with a free trial, a monthly subscription, or a one-time lifetime purchase. Prices are shown in the app before you buy, in your local currency.
- Payment is charged to your Apple Account or Google Play account when you confirm the purchase, or when the free trial ends.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the same price and length unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel in your Apple Account or Google Play subscription settings.
- If you buy a subscription during a free trial, any unused part of the trial ends. We send a reminder 2 days before a trial ends if you allow notifications.
- Lifetime is a one-time purchase. It unlocks Sumi Pro, including the levels and features we add to Pro later, for as long as we offer Sumi, on the store account you bought it with.
Refunds
Purchases are processed by Apple or Google, so refunds are handled under their policies: request one at reportaproblem.apple.com for the App Store, or through your Google Play order history for Android. Your rights under consumer law in your country are not affected.
What Sumi is
Sumi is a learning aid. We work to make its content accurate, but we can't guarantee results or exam success. Sumi is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Japan Foundation, JEES or the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT); level labels follow common unofficial lists.
Content and licences
Character data comes from KANJIDIC2 and JMdict (© EDRDG, CC BY-SA 4.0) and KanjiVG (© Ulrich Apel, CC BY-SA 3.0); see Settings › About › Sources in the app. That data, including what we added to it, is shared under the same licences. Sumi's design, illustrations, sounds and code belong to us. Don't copy, resell or reverse-engineer the app except where the law allows it.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, Sumi is provided as is, and we are not liable for indirect losses. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your statutory rights as a consumer.
Law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protections of the law where you live, and can bring claims there.
